Revitalizing Downs Neighborhood Park

On Saturday morning of January 6th, Downs Neighborhood Park was filled with about 400 native plants waiting to be planted by residents and volunteers from the City of Vancouver and Naturespace, who turned up despite the cold weather ready to restore the parks natural beauty.

We are thrilled about the transformation taking place at Downs Neighborhood Park and all the benefits it’ll bring to families that visit the park, the children who will explore the native plants, and our pollinator friends, who will find nutritious food and habitat among the native plants.

Naturespace is dedicated to restoring and enhancing local parks in Vancouver, with a primary focus on preserving and expanding native habitats. In the past year, Naturespace volunteers successfully planted over 2,000 plants in neighborhood parks and spaces! These native plants, such as Crown brodiaea, Iris tenax, and Blue field gilia, play a crucial role in supporting a variety of local wildlife, from birds to insects, thereby promoting biodiversity and contributing to the stability of our ecosystems.

Interested in getting involved or integrating native plants on your property? Visit Vancouver Bee Project for resources on native plant seeds. Visit the Naturespace to sign up for their upcoming volunteering opportunities.

Vancouver Bee Project will host a Bee City USA Committee meeting at the Fourth Plain Commons building on January 18th from 5pm to 6:30pm. Topics include “How can we make Vancouver a Bee City in 2024?” Join this exciting endeavor in creating more healthy green space in Vancouver!
